ADR refresher training: the 5-year rule and the dates that matter

The refresher rules reward planning and punish drift. Get the timing right and your five years roll on from the expiry date; leave it late and you requalify from scratch.
The rule in four lines
- Your ADR qualification lasts 5 years, and the expiry date is printed on the driver card.
- You can start refresher training one year before the card expires. Pass then, and the qualification is extended for 5 years from the expiry date of the current card, so nothing is lost.
- Start the refresher more than a year before and pass, and the new card runs 5 years from the date you pass, so you give time away.
- You must take the refresher exam at least 2 weeks before the current card expires.

If the card has already expired
There is no grace period and no shortcut: If your ADR card has expired you'll need to take the training and tests to qualify again
(gov.uk). That means the full core module plus your packages or tanks and class modules, not a refresher. It is the single most expensive administrative mistake in this qualification, and it is entirely avoidable with a diary reminder 15 months out.
What the refresher covers
- Refresher training must cover the classes already on your driver card, so it mirrors what you originally qualified in.
- If you fail a refresher module test you can retake that test within 16 weeks without taking the refresher training for that module again (gov.uk).
- Adding new classes is a separate exercise: you take the module and exam for each extra class, and the new card keeps the same expiry date as the original. See classes and modules.
The Driver CPC overlap worth claiming
Up to 14 hours of dangerous goods training can count towards the 35 hours of Driver CPC training an HGV driver has to do every 5 years. It is not automatic: you email DVSA with your name, driving licence number, date of birth, address, the date you completed the training and proof such as a training certificate (gov.uk). Two days of periodic training recovered for the price of an email is worth having.
Refresher courses are shorter than initial qualification, so quotes differ. Tell us your card's expiry date and which classes are on it in the form, and approved centres will come back with dates that land inside the window.
